Hi Conference Fans!!

I am remiss in posting to the blog...however, I have been hearing from you!! Thanks so much for your many calls and e-mail inquiries as we prepare for the 34th Annual Florida State Genealogical Society Conference! The most often asked question is, "What are the hours the Conference begins and ends each day?"

I am including the schedule with this post and hope that it helps you in your planning. Please do consider being there from beginning to end!!! We are fortunate to have all the best speakers and scheduling their lectures was so difficult...I want to hear them all and hope you will too!!

Back in Florida after the FGS Conference in Knoxville, TN; a girls weekend in the beautiful North Carolina mountains and some computer issues which stopped me cold over the weekend. Isn't technology wonderful!

As promised earlier this month, I want to keep you up to date on vendors who will be attending our conference in November.

Our first acceptance came from EasyNetSites in Tampa. EasyNetSites is a new opportunity for societies to create, maintain and update a full-feature website. Find more information at their website and don’t forget to stop by their booth at our conference.

Our second vendor is Wolf’s Head Books from historic St. Augustine, Florida. Wolf's Head Books offers used, rare and antiquarian books from dozens of genres and categories including genealogy. Check out their website and see what they have in their inventory before you visit their booth.

I'm hoping to see more acceptances arrive daily.

Hello from North Fort Myers! I’m Carol Rooksby Weidlich, this year’s Vendor Chair. Cindy is sharing this blog with members of her conference team to keep you in the know of our plans for this year's conference in Southwest Florida.

I'm happy to report Vendor Invitations for this conference has been sent out to 242 entities which include Florida Genealogy Societies (if my mailing doesn't reach you next week, please contact me for information), Florida Historical Societies, local Lineage and Ethnic organizations, book sellers and many local and national genealogy companies. As our vendors come on board, we’ll let you know.

Announcements are going out to societies that our keynote speaker at this year’s conference at the Hyatt Regency Sarasota is Maureen Taylor, the PhotoDetective. Ms. Taylor is recognized internationally for her expertise on the connection of history, genealogy and photography. She has authored many magazine articles as well as three books: “Preserving Your Family Photographs”, “Fashionable Folks Hairstyles 1840-1900”, and with David Allen Lambert, “The Last Muster” which will be available for sale at our conference.

New Conference Team members!

Carol Rooksby Weidlich, President of the Lee County Genealogical Society, has agreed to be Vendor Chair for the Florida State Genealogical Society's 34th Annual Conference. Carol comes to this position with a wealth of experience in the arena of conferences and expositions. She resides on the southwest coast of Florida, near the 2010 Conference location in Sarasota. Along with all of the folks in the Sarasota area, Carol is very excited to be able to tell everyone about the abundance of family history resources in their area of Florida and welcome FSGS members and guests.

Another new member of our 2010 Conference Team is Kim Garvey, formerly the Genealogy Librarian at Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale and presently Instructional Designer and Adjunct Professor of History at the State College of Florida in Bradenton. Kim and her family have been in the Sarasota area for over 3 decades and she has offered to help out with whatever is needed as the time for the conference approaches. Careful, Kim, I will take you up on that!!

"Picturing the Past" is our theme!!

Whoa! Where did May go?? How about Salt Lake City for the biggest ever National Genealogical Society Conference? There were over 2500 people there!! I was able to get lots of ideas, contact a few vendors, obtain a few door prizes and made some great contacts for our Florida State Genealogical Conference. Maureen Taylor was giving sneak peeks at her newest book, "The Last Muster", which will be published and on sale at our conference!!!
Now, if we can get 250 to attend our November event, I do believe that would be a record for us!!!

The "Call for Papers" has been issued to speakers for them to submit their lecture proposals. The Program Committee is anxiously awaiting the deadline of May 28, 2010, so that selections can be made to complete the line up for the 34th Annual Florida State Genealogical Conference. If you wish to submit lecture proposals and have not done so...please e-mail Cindy Hineman at cindyd0321@gmail.com for further information.

Once we have the Main Speakers and lectures chosen...our conference flyer can be created and published. Look for that about mid June.

So, "Picturing the Past" is certain! Will you be there??? November 12-13, 2010!! Save the date!!!!!

2010 FSGS Conference Location and Keynote Speaker

Hi everyone!!

It is about time, some will say!! It has been very difficult for me to hold back on making our location announcement, as I am soooo excited. We had to wait for contracts to be finalized and signed!! And here we go...to beautiful Sarasota, Florida on November 12-13, 2010. The Hyatt Regency Sarasota will be our Conference Hotel and they have lots of room for our lectures, vendors and of course food, fun and friends!!!! Look at their location at http://sarasota.hyatt.com/hyatt/hotels/index.jsp . The price is right at $99.00 for FSGS guests!

The Genealogical Society of Sarasota has accepted the challenge to be our Local Host Committee and they are already forming committees and gathering information for our attendees!

Maureen Taylor, The PhotoDetective, has agreed to be our Keynote Speaker and will be giving 4 lectures over the 2 days of our conference. She has just informed me, (here in Salt Lake City at NGS) that her newest book, "The Last Muster" will be published in September after 10 years in the making!! So...we will be one of the first conferences to have the book on sale!!! It is magnificent!! I got a sneak peek!!!

So, now we are on the way to our biggest and best ever FSGS Conference!!! Save the date and watch for more news as it happens!!

Just a few reminders!

Goodness, this is the week!! As you prepare to come to the FSGS 33rd Annual Conference, don't forget to bring your Brick Wall details with you. Not the whole file, just the facts!! Names, places and dates!! That's what genealogists dwell on, isn't it!!?

You will at least two opportunities to try and get some guidance on further research:

1. APG-FL Ancestor Roadshow: Meet for 15 minutes to discuss your family history problem with a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists-Florida Chapter. Registration for the free consultations will be on Friday from 2:00PM to 5:00PM and the appointments will be held on Saturday. Your registration form is located in your syllabus, which you will receive when you check in.

2. Our Keynote Speaker, Craig R. Scott, CG is focusing on 'Problem Solving Techniques' in his first lecture at 10:00AM on Friday. Mr. Scott's speaking technique will please you as he has lots of opportunity for questions. As we all know, one person's questions can be another's solution!!

In conclusion: Names, dates and locations are the keys to asking a good genealogical question. Bring your information and we hope you will get some answers!!

Hi Conference Fans!

Well, this last week has been a rush...the syllabus is now at the printers: Thank you so much Linda Hudson of Treasure Coast Genealogical Society in Ft. Pierce. She has kept me organized and done a wonderful job creating what we hope will be a useful and informative tool for conference attendees!

Don Pulkit of the Genealogical Society of South Brevard is busily preparing the name badges and my thanks go out to him, as well! The attendee count gets higher by the day! Oh, this will be so much fun!

Pat Rand, FSGS Vendor Chair has gotten so many great vendors that we are doing some major re-arranging and plotting of the vendor space. Be sure to bring your shopping money for the Holidays! Your genealogy friends will love you when you tell them you have purchased their gift directly from the vendors at the FSGS Conference! Oh, you must get a special treat for yourself, too!!

Discounted Hotel Reservations

Hi Everyone,

I got a phone call the other day from a lady who was making reservations at the Hilton Melbourne Rialto Place to come to the FSGS 33rd Annual Genealogical Conference. She told me that the block of rooms assigned to our group was full!!!! (Hooray) This attendee was able to get a reservation, but had to pay a few dollars more. (Boooo!!). I sent a quick note to our hotel contact, Mr. David Domske, and he immediately added more rooms to our block. (Only until Nov 9th!! After that you will have to ask for the Front Desk, to make your reservation)
When you call for your reservation, please be sure to say your are with, "Florida State Genealogical Society." Not just FSGS; please say the complete name. Hilton Melbourne Rialto Place (800-437-8010) is doing whatever they can to accommodate our guests.

Yes!! If you paid for a full 2 day registration, your Friday night meal at the Florida Pioneer Descendant Awards and FSGS Awards Banquet IS included!! I have heard from past years attendees that, "I did not know I could go to the banquet?" Not only that, Saturday Lunch is also part of the deal!!
Now, the Florida Pioneer Reception, which is held just previous to the banquet, is also for everyone, but with a cash bar. This is a great time to discuss the lectures you heard during the day, the door prizes and awesome purchases you found in the Vendor Hall, who has a new grandchild, who has retired, and all the news you rarely get to share with your fellow genealogists!!

If perhaps you choose to, or can only, attend one day of the FSGS 33rd Annual Conference, you may still purchase a Friday night Banquet ticket, for an adult or child's meal. I hope that you have found this blog because you are interested in the Florida State Genealogical Society (FSGS) Conference!! I will be posting some good news updates, as well as answering questions.
To begin, the 33rd Annual FSGS Conference is going to be 13-14 November 2009 at the Hilton Melbourne Rialto Place, 200 Rialto Place, Melbourne, Florida 32901-3092. The Hotel has given us a reduced rate for conference attendees that cannot be beat!! Call for information directly to the hotel, at 800 437-8010 and ask for the "Florida State Genealogical Society" rate. **Please say the whole name, not just FSGS, to ensure you get the correct group rate.

Next, you will find the entire program schedule posted at the Society's web site very soon. (today or tomorrow!!) Of course, everything is subject to change, but this looks pretty definite right now!! Look at http://flsgs.org to download a registration form. We do not do online registration at this time.
